Chapter Twenty-Four

The sanitarium grew larger and larger until we reached the base of the cliff where it perched like a patient leopard waiting for prey to pass below. The immense white walls sent a shiver of fear down my spine. Somewhere deep down, I knew that prisoners who entered the building never left its walls.

"Off the boat," a guard called. They marched us up a narrow staircase with no handrail that crawled up the cliffside. It was old and wet, reeking of copper. For a moment, I wished Bryce, Sike, and Arlonne were with us. Arlonne would be silent, emanating strength that I could imitate. Sike would make a joke or wink at the other captives to cheer us up. And Bryce would have an idea and the experience to pull it off. If we hadn’t separated, would we have even been caught in the first place?

"Up, up, up," the scaled wildling commanded, bringing me back to reality. I didn’t really want my friends to be here, doomed with us. I was fiercely glad that they would have the chance to escape to safety in the Mortal Plane. At the sight of my small smile, my guard pinched my arm. I didn't give her the satisfaction of a reaction.

My legs were heavy as we climbed the staircase. It felt like weights had been adhered to the soles of my feet. I glanced up to see Dorian and Kane struggling, their bodies shuddering against the added invisible resistance that the wire caused. It was unlike my own collar, which merely felt like an uncomfortable weight that threw me off balance. The collar must be incredibly painful for them. If the fight hadn't already worn us out, this trek would do it.

We reached the top of the staircase. The sole advantage of the climb had been that there was more distance between Dorian and me, but now the guards lined us back up. Even with Roxy and Kane between us, my vision blurred momentarily.

A small door stood in the nearest wall. It was barely larger than the average Immortal. Maybe eight feet? It opened as we approached. White shimmery walls greeted me on the inside, so sterile and blank that my eyeballs felt as dry as bones. A new group of guards, made up entirely of makers, awaited us in the narrow corridor. They were much smaller than the rulers, but their arms were thick with ropey muscles that said not to test them. They wore open-faced helmets, allowing us to look at their wide, beautiful faces and red eyes. Their armor covered everything except their upper arms, possibly a specific gap to show off powerful physiques. Even their weaker, second pair of arms had disappeared beneath armor.

“Watch these carefully, especially the small creatures in vampire clothing,” the female guard said. “They fought back when we restrained them. That one,” she pointed to me, “killed Arton with this.” She handed over the gun and necklaces carefully. “The necklaces hold a powerful glamor which made them look like wildlings.
